12 Apr It’s Time for Spring Cleaning!
By: Megan Jones
Spring is here, and I myself am feeling more chipper as the bay experienced a beautiful sunny weekend. It felt like the first beautiful weekend in a long time! Now before all weekends turn sunny, it is a great time to get excited spring cleaning! Spring is a great time to go through the “junk closet” and decide if everything in it is worth keeping. This may be your perfect opportunity to embrace the moment, as it’s the perfect time for spring cleaning!
A Few Tips on Spring Cleaning
Getting Started is the Hardest Part
Remember the hardest part is starting. So pick a day and time and commit to it. Then grab your favorite energizer drink and a speaker to play some good music and get to it! If you still find yourself having trouble, tell yourself, you only have to do it for 30 minutes. Then set a timer. When the timer goes off decide if you want to keep going or schedule another time to commit to.
Learn to Let Go
It can be difficult to let things go. I personally have a ton of memorabilia that holds a memory of an event that I attended that can quickly clutter up a whole closet. However, I have learned that I do not need to keep everything, and the best way I learned this way to practice konmari. Konmari is a technique that helps you declutter your items. The idea is to pick up an item, and ask yourself if it sparks joy? If the answer is yes, then keep, if it is a no, then toss or donate it. It can be difficult; however, it is a great way to keep only the essential items that bring you happiness in your home. You may be surprised at all the extra items you have that you don’t feel you need!
Finish the job
Once you’ve cleaned and you have created your toss pile, donation pile, return pile, items that need to be filed away—complete the job. If you are anything like me, I tend to feel that the job is accomplished solely after the cleaning and then these piles that tend to linger in the house. I would highly recommend completing the job, by dropping the items off at donation, finally putting everything away, and throwing out the trash. Your house will feel cleaner, and you may feel more accomplished knowing that you have truly completed the entirety of the task.
Spring cleaning is definitely not my favorite thing about spring, however, the outcome is worth putting in the work!
